SYNCHRONIZING VIBRATION. A STUDY OF INTERACTIVE INSTALLATION

Recent research into human physiological synchrony shows that when partners sleep together, as well as when an audience of music listeners experience the same classical piece, their heartbeats synchronise. Hans Jenny (1967), the founder of cymatics, explains – “no matter how different the respective objects are, no matter how different their causes and functional mechanisms are, they have a common rhythmicity, oscillation and sequence”. In this master’s thesis, the author has drawn inspiration from research and this proposition to create an interactive popular-science installation capable of conducting an experiment during the experience of the installation, measuring the heartbeats of 2 people and their beats per minute. It invites the experiencers of the installation to find answers to the questions – if we assume that we synchronise when experiencing art, design, music, react physiologically to it in a similar way, does this change our sense of being in society as a whole? If synchronisation does not happen – what is it that makes us react differently from the other?
